A love of the Angus breed has been passed on throughout generations of our family business.

Tapiri Angus was founded in 1961 by Ross McLachlan and his father, Stuart. Today it is run by Ross’s daughter Lucy, and her husband Rob Thorneycroft, with the family recently celebrating 60 years of breeding in 2021.

The stud is situated in Rangitumau, 15 minutes north of Masterton in the Wairarapa. It is run in conjunction with a commercial sheep and beef breeding/finishing operation, over two farms with a combined effective area of 760 ha. The properties range from hard hill country to high quality flats. We love to watch how our stock perform in these environments, with the cows converting rough hill country feed into heavy calves, and the calves growing into superb prime cattle.

Tapiri Angus - Southdown sheep stud, “Lodge Southdowns”

In addition, we have a Southdown sheep stud, “Lodge Southdowns”. The McLachlan family has been breeding stud Southdown sheep since 1913, previously as the Willow Park Stud at Opaki and Pine Grove Stud at Rangitumau, before the current Lodge Stud was founded in 1939 by N.S McLachlan, Lucy’s grandfather. We believe the early maturing nature of the breed, and therefore the ability to get lambs away early off their mothers, is the true strength of the Southdown breed. We sell a number of 2th rams each year.
